Previously a journalist, he gained some contemporary reputation as a nature and patriotic versifier and lyrist. He remains best known, however, for his anti-open access activities and as a thorn in the flesh of the LA and particularly in that of J Y W MacAlister and James Duff Brown. His criticism was expressed as an individual and also as a prominent member of the Society of Public Librarians.
